About Old Town Scottsdale With the notable exception of the 1909 Little Red Schoolhouse--now the Scottsdale Historical Museum--most the buildings date back to the '20s. A laid-back grid of wood and faux adobe with covered walkways, Old Town has ditched its utilitarian past to become a community of eclectic shopping. Its eastern end leads to the more sophisticated architecture of Scottsdale Center for the Arts, city government buildings, and a row of restaurants and bars. West of Old Town, across Scottsdale Road, is the famous arts district. Old Town Scottsdale is a special place. Scottsdale as you know is not very old, as it just celebrated it's 50th birthday a year or so ago, so Old Town is about as old as it gets around these parts. However, even though it's not so "old" by many standards, it has all the charm of the earlier western days in Scottsdale. Hitching posts and wood-front shops are reminiscent of the days when sheep were herded down Scottsdale Road, and the surrounding areas were still open space. Those open spaces have since evolved into a string of shops and entertainment hubs. Although most of the buildings date from the 1920s, the old town district of the "wests most western town" features authentic looking buildings. You will find shops full of western jewelry, clothing, knicknacks, and art. There are also great bars and restaurants so come planning to eat.
