Dining in Old Town Scottsdale
New restaurants have proliferated in the Phoenix metropolitan area due to the Valley's rapid growth and the influence of adventurous chefs who have emigrated here. An influx of Thai, Peruvian, Vietnamese, and Japanese restaurants have created a culinary scene of sophistication and diversity.
Contemporary menus feature touches of the creator's homeland or ethnicity mixed with local recipes and ingredients. Pacific Rim or Latino foods are fused with spices native to the Southwest, such as Mexican coriander, fragrant Mexican oregano, canela sticks (Mexican cinnamon), and, of course, chiles from mild to explosive.
Many of the best restaurants in the Valley are in resorts, camouflaged behind courtyard walls, or tucked away in shopping malls. Newer, upscale eateries are clustered along Camelback Corridor and in Scottsdale. Great Mexican food can be found throughout the Valley, but the most authentic spots are in the Hispanic neighborhoods of South Phoenix.
Restaurants change hours, locations, chefs, prices, and menus frequently, so it's best to call ahead to confirm. Show up without a reservation during tourist season, and you may have to head for a fast-food drive-through window to avoid a two-hour wait for a table.
